Utility and telecom bill audits for multi-site operators

The billing errors that repeat across electricity, gas, water and telecom accounts, and the data you need to find them.

Start with the account list

Pull every account from every supplier for every site, then match each one to an open location. Accounts still billing for closed or sold sites are the most common find and the easiest to prove.

What to check on each bill

  • Rate or tariff class against how the site actually uses power, gas or water.
  • Estimated reads strung together for months, then a large catch-up bill.
  • Meter multipliers and demand charges that changed without a site change.
  • Late fees and reconnection charges on bills paid on time.
  • Taxes and surcharges the site is exempt from, where an exemption applies.
  • Telecom lines, circuits and features still billed after a move or cancellation.

Look-back and refunds

How far back a supplier or regulator allows a correction depends on the jurisdiction and the tariff. Raise findings as soon as they are confirmed and keep each claim to one account and one error so it can be credited without escalation.

Keeping it fixed

Re-run the checks every month on new bills. The same tariff or estimated-read problem tends to come back after a supplier system change.
